Stress Management

What is Stress?

Stress is a normal part of everyday life. Our bodies respond to stress in the same way they respond to anything threatening - with the flight-fight syndrome. We can stay and fight the threat, or we can run away from it. Although our bodies instinctually prepare us to respond in this way, the stressful events in our lives are rarely life-threatening, so the extra energy our bodies have produced has nowhere to go.
It just builds up and we experience the symptoms of stress.

How do I know if I suffer from stress?

Stress affects us in many different ways.
Some people may suffer from anxiety, muscular tension, hyperventilation or panic attacks.
Others may develop stress related illness such as hypertension, asthma or ulcers.
Yet others may suffer from a variety of phobias, obsessive thoughts or compulsive behaviours.

What can I do about it?

We need some pressure in our lives to help us achieve our goals. But when those pressures become too great for us to cope with, we become stressed. We need to be able to control that stress so that it is at a manageable level.

The Stress Management Training programme equips you with a number of tools to help you manage the stresses in your life better.
It does this by training you in various techniques - including different methods of relaxation and breathing, eliminating negative thinking, developing positive thinking, and assertiveness training - as well as giving you the information necessary to know what is happening and why these methods work.

Gill offers Stress Management on a one-to-one basis at the Maidenhead practice, but works in groups in organizations throughout Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Surrey and the general West London area.
